KUALA LUMPUR: Another batch of 49 Philippines workers will be repatriated from Syria on Friday, the Department of Foreign Affairs (DFA) said Thursday. The DFA said in a statement that the group of workers bring the total number of returnees to 2,930 since the violence began in Syria in March 2011. As of Nov 6, the Philippine government said 192 Filipinos are being given refuge by the Philippine Embassy in Damascus, Syria while their repatriation is being processed. Filipino workers were repatriated due to escalating violence and worsening security condition in the troubled Middle Eastern country. In September, as violence in Syria continued to rise, the Philippines government removed 280 workers from the country as a precautionary measure. The group was allowed to come home without having to secure the mandatory exit requirements. Estimates indicate there are about 4,000 Filipino workers remaining in Syria. “The Filipino workers were repatriated due to the escalating violence and worsening security condition in the Middle East state," the foreign ministry said.
