Uganda premier takes to YouTube to respond to Kony campaign
Published in Bikya Masr on 17 - 03 - 2012

Johannesburg (dpa) – Ugandan Prime Minister Amama Mbabazi took to YouTube on Saturday to respond to the viral campaign against alleged war criminal Joseph Kony, who originally hails from the country.
A video produced by the US-based Invisible Children group about Kony and his brutal Lord's Resistance Army has been viewed over 100 million times on social media sites.
“The campaign has not just been an impressive indication of the power of social media, far more importantly it has demonstrated the fundamental decency which unites in concern right-minded people throughout the world when we see innocent people suffering,” said Mbabazi in an eight-minute clip.
“It is particularly welcoming to see so many young people uniting across barriers of nation, race, religion and culture to take a stand for justice,” he said.
But the prime minister was also critical of the 30-minute viral video, saying it gave the wrong impression that Kony was still in Uganda.
“Joseph Kony is truly an evil criminal,” said Mbabazi, adding, “We do not need a slick video on YouTube for us to take notice.”
He said Uganda troops were pursuing the LRA through neighboring central African countries. He termed the rebel group a “regional menace.”
Kony is wanted by the International Criminal Court on allegations of war crimes and crimes against humanity.
The premier also took to his Twitter account to invite 20 top celebrity-activists, including George Clooney and Bill Gates, to visit the country.
Jason Russell, the maker of the Kony video, was detained in San Diego on Friday for disorderly conduct after reportedly being drunk, naked and masturbating in public. He was reportedly taken to a mental facility for observation.
Russell and his group have been criticized for errors in the film and questions about the campaign's goals.
