CAIRO (dpa): US pro-democracy activists left Egypt aboard a US military plane on Thursday, an Egyptian source at Cairo airport said, after a travel ban was lifted. The activists, who received a travel ban for working for non-governmental organizations accused by Egypt of receiving foreign funding illegally, flew to Cyprus, the source said. A total of 43 Egyptian and foreign activists, including Norwegian, Serbian and Lebanese nationals, are facing charges of working for the NGOs involved in the case. Some non-US activists were on the same plane, the source said, declining to identify their nationalities. The case caused a rift between Egypt and the United States, which threatened to withhold 1.3 billion dollars in annual military aid. The NGOs involved include Germany's Konrad Adenauer Foundation and the Washington-based International Republican Institute. Judges hearing the case resigned this week. It is still unclear if the charges against the workers will be dropped. BM Ramadan Al-Fatash ShortURL: http://goo.gl/Gfot7 Tags: Leave Egypt, NGO workers, US Section: Egypt, Latest News
