Jerusalem (dpa) – Israeli police stormed a holy site in Jerusalem after Palestinian youths began throwing stones after Friday prayers, police and witnesses said. Police spokesman Mickey Rosenfeld said more than 100 Palestinians began throwing stones at police stationed at one of the gates to the Temple Mount compound, which houses the al-Aqsa Mosque and is known to Muslims as Haram al-Sharif. Police fired stun grenades to disperse the youths, he said. Several Palestinians took refuge inside the al-Aqsa Mosque in the compound, which is also holy to Jews. Police did not enter the mosque, but they remained in the compound, Rosenfeld said. The Temple Mount is one of the main flashpoints of the Israeli-Arab conflict. For Jews, it is the site where their biblical Temple once stood. For Muslims, it marks the spot from where the Prophet Mohammed ascended to heaven.
