Baghdad (dpa) – At least 32 people were killed Thursday in car bomb and machine gun attacks in several areas of Baghdad, Arab media reported. The first attack occurred during the morning rush hour in the mainly Shiite Muslim district of Karrada in southern Baghdad, killing at least 10 people, according to the broadcaster Al Jazeera. The attack was followed by a spate of car bombings in other parts of Baghdad, believed to have targeted police personnel, reported Al Arabiya television. Meanwhile, at least 27 people, mainly policemen, were injured Thursday in three car bombings in the city of Kirkuk, around 250 kilometers north of Baghdad, security sources told dpa. Thursday's attacks are the deadliest this week. At least 16 people were killed Sunday in a suicide bombing outside a police training academy in central Baghdad Fears have grown among Iraqis about a surge in attacks by armed groups or even a sectarian conflict since US troops completed their withdrawal from the country in December.
