CAIRO: Egypt's Maspero Youth Union – a Coptic Christian group – and a number of Coptic and political movements said they would organize a march for Sunday beginning in Cairo's Abdel Moneim Riad Square and head to the headquarters of the Egyptian parliament in protest against the displacement of 54 Coptic families from the village of Amiriyah, in Alexandria. Mena Thabet, the media spokesman of the Union, said that the issue dates back to a dispute that broke out between Copts and Muslims in late January, after a Muslim family discovered an alleged affair between their daughter and a Coptic man. In response a number of residents set some houses belonging to Copts in the village on fire. Conciliatory meetings had been held to appease the families of the two sides, called “customary reconciliation meetings” among the disputed under the chairmanship of a Salafist Sheikh, who ruled for the deportation of the families and the selling of their properties. A number of MPs submitted an inquiry to the Speaker of Parliament Saad EL-Katatni, who according to Thabet rejected to review the request of Emad Gad of the Egyptian Social Democratic Party. Pictures of these customary meetings have been spread on Facebook and have raised controversy and ire among activists. Thabet said the march will call on the elected parliament to investigate the incident, which without one is “a violation of the basic human rights.” BM ShortURL: http://goo.gl/Tfmnv Tags: Coptic, featured, Maspero Youth, Parliament, Protest Section: Egypt, Latest News, Religion
