Copenhagen (dpa) – Danish Foreign Minister Villy Soevndal was due Tuesday to visit Nigeria for talks with President Goodluck Jonathan and other officials, amid reports of fresh attacks attributed to the Islamist group Boko Haram in the north of the country. Denmark holds the six-month rotating European Union presidency, and Soevndal was to represent EU Foreign Policy Chief Catherine Ashton, the Danish EU presidency said in a statement. “Nigeria has recently been plagued by riots and acts of terrorism, and right now it's incredibly important that (the) EU shows solidarity with the Nigerian people,” Soevndal said. The talks with President Jonathan and Foreign Minister Olugbenga Ashiru were to centre on the unrest in the country and the terrorist threat from Boko Haram, cooperation between the EU and Nigeria as well as political and economic developments in Africa's most populous nation. Boko Haram hit the north-western city of Kano with a fresh wave of attacks targeting police stations and civilians late Monday, security sources said.
