CAIRO: Egypt's ministry of health announced Monday that the total number of casualties in the ongoing clashes between protesters and police is 13, 8 in Cairo and five in Suez. Hisham Shiha, head of the urgent medical care at the ministry, said that the latest victim is 21-year-old man identified as Mohamed Ahmed Qenawy. According to Shiha, he was hit by rubber bullets in the neck and chest and was transferred from the field hospital at Omar Makram Mosque this morning to Qasr al-Aini hospital, but he died shortly after his arrival. Shiha said that 15 injured protesters remain in critical condition at the hospital and an additional five are in intensive care units. 72 people were injured since Sunday evening and the wounds vary from bone breakage to bullets and burns. The ministry's statement said that 161 people were treated at the makeshift hospitals in and around Tahrir Square and were released soon after as they suffered minor injuries including shortness of breath due to tear gas and cuts and bruises. The police, who insists its soldiers are employing “maximum self-control” when dealing with protesters have used hundreds of tear gas and rubber bullets in their attempts to disperse protesters. Dozens of protesters have lost their eyes as a result of sniper shooting. The protesters took to the streets on Thursday after violence at a football match left 75 dead and hundreds injured. They are demanding the end of the military junta ruling the country. BM ShortURL: http://goo.gl/3IIGx Tags: Deaths, featured, MOI, Police, Protests Section: Egypt, Latest News
