CAIRO: The world football governing body FIFA announced its deepest sorrow for the recent match violence that left 75 dead and almost 2000 injured following the Ahly and Masry match in the Egyptian city of Port Said. “Today is a black day for football and we must take steps to ensure that such a catestrophe never happens again,” read the letter sent to the Egyptian Football Association chief from FIFA. “FIFA is deeply saddened by the tragic incidents which led to the death of football fans and others at last night's [Wednesday] match in Port Said. As expressed by President Blatter in a letter to the Egyptian Football Association, FIFA is in mourning and our thoughts are with the families of all those who lost their lives,” the statement continued. Ironically, the letter was addressed to Sameer Zahran, who was officially removed from his post as the head of the Egyptian Football Association following the violence and mass criticism. He was dubbed corrupt and held responsible for the ill management of the football association that was haunted with scandels for the past decade. Despite the removal of Zahran, FIFA said it offers “its full support to the Egyptian Football Association and will provide the EFA with any assistance it needs with regard to this tragedy.” BM ShortURL: http://goo.gl/FYy2h Tags: EFA, FIFA, Port Said, Violence Section: Egypt, Egyptian Sport, Football, Latest News
