CAIRO: Egypt's Speaker of Parliament Mohamed Saad Katatni, also a member of the Freedom and Justice Party of the Muslim Brotherhood, called for reaching a consensus between political forces while drawing up the new constitution, and that it “should not differentiate between Egyptians.” This came during a meeting between Katatni in his office on Monday with a members of the French National Assembly, who were currently visiting Egypt. Katatni said that there is already a consensus that the constitution should be written by all groups and spectra of Egyptian society, and noted that the Upper and Lower Houses of the Parliament will form a constituent assembly of 100 members for this purpose. He explained that there is an “interim constitution for the conduct of affairs in the current period, which is the constitutional declaration, which maintains its laws and regulations, and the current parliament has full powers and can issue a law and hold the government accountable in accordance with this declaration.” Egypt's parliament began its current session on January 23, the first post-revolution parliament in Egypt since the ousting of President Hosni Mubarak last February after 18 days of street protests.
