Tripoli (dpa) – Sudanese President Omar Bashir arrived in the Libyan capital of Tripoli Saturday for a two-day visit, his first after the overthrow of slain leader Muammar Gaddafi. He was received in the airport by the head of Libya's ruling Transitional National Council, Mustafa Abdul Jalil. Last year, Bashir said that Sudan had supported the rebels fighting against Gaddafi by providing them with weapons. Bashir and Gaddafi had an uneasy relationship, as Khartoum had accused Gaddafi of helping Darfur rebels against Sudanese forces. The Libyan uprising began in February, continuing for eight months until Gaddafi was captured and killed in October. In June, the Hague-based International Criminal Court issued an arrest warrant for Gaddafi for suspected crimes against humanity committed during his crackdown on opposition during the uprising. In 2009, Bashir became the first head of state to be charged by the ICC, which issued a warrant for his arrest over atrocities in Darfur. The crimes against humanity charge was expanded about a year later, to include genocide. BM ShortURL: http://goo.gl/xqzJZ Tags: Diplomacy, Omar al-Bashir Section: Latest News, Libya, Sudan
