Nairobi (dpa) – At least seven people died when an overloaded boat ferrying passengers between mainland Kenya and the island of Lamu capsized late Sunday, the Kenya Red Cross said Monday. It said 25 people were rescued and 23 swam to safety after the accident. There were 82 people on board and rescue operations were continuing Monday morning to find the missing. Overloading of passenger ferries is common in Kenya and the eastern Africa region, including Tanzania – where 240 people died in September when a boat sank while taking passengers between islands off the mainland.
