Protests erupted Thursday in security camps in the Yemeni capital Sana'a against a senior security official, who is a relative of outgoing President Ali Abullah Saleh, reported the opposition Yemeni website Mareb Press. Dozens of policemen protested outside the camps in southern Sana'a, demanding the sacking of Major-General Mohammed al-Qusi, an undersecretary at the Interior Ministry, according to the website. He is reportedly married to a niece of Saleh. The soldiers blocked a major street and set car tyres ablaze, the site quoted witnesses as saying. Meanwhile, a Yemeni governmental commission removed military barricades in the district of al-Hasaba in northern Sana'a, the scene of sporadic fighting between forces loyal to Saleh and followers of the influential opposition tribal leader Sheikh Sadiq al-Ahmar. The move is part of efforts to re-establish security in the Arabian Peninsula country, under a power transfer deal that grants Saleh immunity from prosecution in return for relinquishing power after a 33-year rule.
