CAIRO: The Tahrir Doctor's Association sent out a recorded message from inside the Omar Makram mosque near Tahrir Square on Saturday afternoon, calling for people to protect them from ongoing military attacks on field hospitals. Doctor Mohamed Fattouh recorded the message, reporting that troops surrounded the the field hospital he was operating in Tahrir Square, threatening to arrest the doctors if they did not leave the hospital. He said that 15 doctors and 9 patients were cornered inside of the makeshift hospital. Additionally, a number of doctors were detained by the military police when they stormed the square on Saturday afternoon. Makeshift hospitals have been constructed in public spaces and in mosques across downtown Cairo in order to treat those who sustained injuries in the ongoing violence. According to official estimates from the Egyptian Ministry of Health, ten protesters have been killed and 432 were wounded as of Saturday evening. The doctors said that insuring the safety of medical personnel and the wounded is “a responsibility of the Egyptian people, both civil and military,” and asked for an end of the hostage situation. The Doctor's Syndicate has come forward to condemn the violence against doctors and patients, saying that it is the responsibility of the military to ensure the protection of the field hospitals.
