College Football Round Up: Week 12
Published in Bikya Masr on 21 - 11 - 2011

CARIO: Four of the top seven ranked teams in college football lost this weekend. This helps #3 Alabama, who is now back in the chase for the title. The bad news is that #2 Ok. State, #4 Oregon, #5 Oklahoma, and #7 Clemson all took a tumble and look to be playing for a different prize now. Here's the round up.
Iowa State knocked off previously unbeaten #2 Oklahoma State in two overtimes in Ames by a final score of 37-31. The Cowboys built a seemingly solid 24-7 lead in the third quarter but the Cyclones did not back down and built a rally of their own. Iowa State kicked it into gear in the last two quarters and leveled the game at 24 thanks to an Albert Gary touchdown reception from Cyclones QB Jared Barnett with 5:30 remaining in the game. The Cowboys appeared to take the lead with 1:17 left, but a 37-yard field goal by Quinn Sharp was ruled just wide. The ball was drifting toward the right upright, and as it floated over the post, it looked like a good kick, but the referee said it was no good. The game went to overtime. In the first extra period, both teams exchanged scores, but after the ensuing Cowboy's possession, Brandon Weeden's pass was picked off, allowing Iowa State to win with a field goal. Rather than leave it up to a kicker, the Cyclones gave it to running back Jeff Woody who plunged into the end zone which won the game for Iowa State and dashed the title hopes of Oklahoma State in one fell swoop.
Key Performers:
QB J. Barnett ISU 31/58 376 yards 3 TDs 2 INTs
QB B. Weeden OKST 42/58 476 yards 3 TDs 3 INTs
WR A. Gary ISU 7 catches 109 yards 1 TD
The Trojans of Southern California went into Eugene Oregon and grounded the high-flying Ducks 38-35. #4 Oregon had just trounced once undefeated #9 Stanford the week before, but this week their fortunes were reversed. Led by stellar junior QB Matt Barkley, the Trojans came out on fire in the first half. With a 21-7 lead going into the break, the Trojans could not have played much better. In the second half, they opened up the gap even more by extending the lead to 38-14 at the end of the third. Oregon responded with a surge of offense of their own, sparked by a De'Anthony Thomas 96-yard kickoff return for a touchdown near the end of the third. All of a sudden it looked as though the Trojans were losing grasp of the game after Kenjon Barner, LaMichael James' replacement, after he had to leave with an injured elbow. This tacked on a score, making the game 38-27 with 12:44 to play. Oregon's all-season hero, LaMichael James, returned to the game and capped off a Ducks drive with a 1-yard touchdown run and after the successful two point conversion made the score 38-35. With a little over 2 minutes remaining Oregon got the ball back after a USC fumble and Derron Thoma, then went to work to try to save the Ducks' season. Thomas could only lead the Ducks to a field goal try with 7 seconds left. Oregon kicker Alejandro Maldonado's 37-yard field goal hooked wide left and USC escaped with the victory.
Key Performers:
QB M. Barkley USC 26/34 323 yards 4 TDs 1 INT
WR M. Lee USC 8 catches 187 yards 1 TD
RB K. Barner ORE 15 carries 123 yards 2 TDs
#5 Oklahoma ran into a buzz saw Saturday night against #22 Baylor, led by Heisman contender Robert Griffin III. The Baylor Bears showed once again why they are no longer the doormats of the Big12 with their performance against the Sooners. Griffin III passed for 479 yards and four scores, and looked unstoppable the whole night. Oklahoma would not go quietly into the night, however, and took the lead with eleven minutes to play in the third quarter after a Blake Bell one yard run. The Baylor quarterback still had something to say about the result and he led his team to three consecutive scores, putting the game at 38-24, with 12:49 left in the fourth. After a fourth Blake Bell touchdown run to tie the game at 38, the Bears had the ball back and looked to finish off the Sooners. Griffin III made play after play and with seven seconds left he made the play that mattered most. He launched a 34-yard pass to Terrence Williams who came down with it in the corner of the end zone between two Oklahoma defenders. The touchdown pass buried Oklahoma and vaulted Robert Griffin III right back to the top of the list of Heisman contenders.
