Queens Park Rangers 2-3 Manchester City League leaders Manchester City took on Queens Park Rangers on Saturday in one of the more interesting matches of the weekend. Rangers took the lead in the 28th when Jay Bothroyd got away from his marker Stefan Savic and headed in a goal. The first half belonged to Queens Park as they took shot after shot at City but the quality of the Manchester side shined through just before half. Edin Dzeko cut in from the left side into the area and showed his patience and precision with a clean strike at the near post in the 43rd minute. The Bosnian took his time and fired in a low shot that got past keeper Patrick Kenny. City came out determined in the second half and David Silva put the visitors up with a beautifully taken ball in 51st. He picked up a low cross in stride in the penalty area and blasted a left footed shot inside the left post. Rangers responded with a goal in the 69th from Heidar Helguson but City showed their mettle and Yaya Toure responded with a header of his own in the 74th that kept City on top of the table for another week. Manchester United 1-0 Sunderland The Red Devils celebrated 25 years of Sir Alex Ferguson as manager with a win against Sunderland. Even though United got the three points Sir Alex could not have been pleased with the way he they got them. The lone goal was actually scored by former United player in Wes Brown who headed into his own net from a corner. United did little to allay the concerns of their supporters with their performance in this match. The second half saw a couple good chances for the Red Devils including a Javier Hernandez header that was cleared off the line. In the end Manchester United got the result and the points. Newcastle 2-1 Everton Resurgent Newcastle sit in 3rd place in the Premiership, one point behind United, thanks to a masterful half volley from defender Ryan Taylor. Newcastle went ahead early thanks to John Heitinga of Everton. The Dutch defender had a cross glance in off the bottom of his studs after 12 minutes which put the Liverpool side under pressure. Then at almost the half hour mark Toon defender Ryan Taylor had a cleared ball bounce out to him at the left corner of the area and he launched a shot over Tim Howard's outstretched arms and into the top right corner of goal. Newcastle rode that two-goal lead through the game, at times looking like they had already won but Jack Rodwell made things interesting in first half stoppage time. The midfielder got his head on a ball into the box and snapped in a dart that cut the deficit in half for the visitors. Later Everton almost went ahead on a Louis Saha shot but it deflected off the bottom of the post. Newcastle threw everyone back to defend in the dying minutes as everyone for Everton was coming forward trying to salvage a point but it was not to be for the Blues.
