CAIRO: Egypt's military is cracking down on alleged militants in the Sinai Peninsula. On Monday, local media reported that operation “Eagle” joined armed forces with local residents in preparation to “remove extremists from the governorate.” Reports on Tuesday morning from security officials in Sinai said that at least one person was killed and dozens arrested in early raids on suspected militants. The military mission comes less than two days after government officials and local Bedouin elders met to discuss the ongoing situation facing the Sinai after a number of attacks had been seen. Armored tanks arrive in Sheikh Zuwaid, about 15 kilometers from the Egypt-Gaza border. Police and military generals inspected “hot zones” inside and on the outskirts of Sheikh Zuwaid as well as the local police station. Four armored vehicles were reportedly deployed in the town, youm7.com said. In late July, Islamic militants attacked a police station in al-Arish, some 30 minutes from the Gaza border. In the violence that ensued, at least five people were killed in the crossfire that led many in the country fearing a resurgence of Islamic-related violence. BM
