CAIRO: A wild dog species known as the Egyptian jackal has turned out to be a gray wolf, experts have said. Found in Egypt, the former Egyptian jackal, had been previously classified as a subspecies of the golden jackal. Recent DNA studies however, have revealed that it is actually a gray wolf species. The new results reveal how difficult it is for scientists to identify and categorize animal species. “The Egyptian jackal (Canis aureus lupaster), as its common name suggests, is found in Egypt and has always been classified as a subspecies of the golden jackal (Canis aureus). However, recent DNA analysis has revealed that it's actually a kind of gray wolf (Canis lupus),” wrote the Discovery channel. It continued to say that the new “discovery” reveals that the gray wolf, common in Europe and North America – although campaigns to kill the animal have again surfaced in the United States – evolved in Africa and then traveled globally, as did humans.
