CAIRO: Less than a year after holding the post of Israeli envoy to Cairo, the Israeli Ambassador to Egypt Yitzhak Levanon was replaced on Sunday by a new envoy following a decision by the Appointments Committee of the Israeli Foreign Ministry. The Israeli Official radio station, Radio Kol Israel, stated the Appointments Committee named a new Israeli Envoy to Cairo, replacing the incumbent Levanon, who had served in the post for 11 months. The ministry named Ya'acov Amitai, considered one of the top Arabists in the ministry, as envoy to Egypt, replacing the senior diplomat who was temporarily appointed to the position last November and is set to retire from the foreign service at the end of next year. Amitai , who is the vice-president of the Center for Political Research of the Israeli Foreign Ministry, will follow Levanon, who took office in Egypt in November 2009, to succeed longtime Israeli ambassador Shalom Cohen, who served in Egypt for 4 consecutive years.
