CAIRO: The Central Agency for Public Mobilization and Statistics (CAPMAS) reported the monthly summary of foreign trade data for the month of April and said exports amounted to 12.535 billion Egyptian pounds compared to 10.507 billion pounds for the month of April 2009, an increase by19.3 percent. It comes as the Egyptian government continues efforts to boost its economy ahead of Parliamentary elections this fall. The statement pointed out that this is due to an increase in value of exports of some commodities such as petroleum products, crude oil, bars and rods, angles, wires made of steel, garments, carpets, and clem. The statement said the imports “amounted to 22.601 billion pounds for the month of April 2010, the amount of 19.145 billion pounds for the month of April 2009, an increase of 18.0 percent,” indicating that this is “due to the rise in the value of imports of some commodities such as petroleum products, chemicals, inorganic and organic, crude oil, plastic forms, primary car ride, medicines and pharmaceutical preparations.” The statement added that the value of the trade deficit rose from 8.647 billion pounds from the month of April 2009 to 10.066 billion pounds for the month of April 2010 at a rate of 16.3 percent increase.
