A state security officer, Osama El-Keneisy, has been sentenced to 15 years in jail for torturing to death Sayed Belal during investigations into a bomb attack at the Two Saints Church in Alexandria. El-Keneisy was sentenced, in absentia, to life in prison in December 2012. The Alexandria Court of Cassation ordered a retrial to start on 17 March after he turned himself in. Other officers convicted in the case, including Hossam El-Shennawy, Ahmed Mostafa Kamel, Mohamed El-Shimy, were also given long sentences. Signs of torture were found on the victim's body, prompting his family to file a lawsuit against the state security officers. El-Keneisy was a former officer in the now-disbanded State Security Investigations Service (SSIS). Twenty-three people died in the attack on the church on 1 January 2011.
