Egypt's Foreign Minister Sameh Shoukry said his country has been keen on nominating itself for a non-permanent seat at the United Nations Security Council (UNSC) out of its responsibility toward the African continent. During a meeting at the African Union premises in New York with African representatives to the UN on Thursday, Shoukry said Egypt will be supporting African causes at the UNSC to activate the UN objective of preserving international peace and security. Egypt, a founding member of the United Nations, has a prominent role in international peace and security keeping efforts and is committed to promoting joint international action under the UN umbrella to achieve collective security, he said. Egypt is committed to supporting all UN and regional organizations efforts in conflict areas, especially in the Middle East and Africa, the top diplomat has said. The minister touched on terrorism threatening Africa, stressing that Egypt will continue to exert efforts at the regional and multilateral levels to combat terrorism and eradicate terror organizations, according to Foreign Ministry Spokesman Badr Abdel Ati. He reiterated Egypt's condolences to Ethiopia over the recent terrorist attacks against a number of Ethiopian nationals in Libya, saying that if the international community had responded decisively to the horrendous beheading of Egyptian nationals in Libya, the latest incident would not have happened.
