Egyptian security forces arrested eight protesters in
Alexandria
on Friday afternoon, according to a statement by local security officials.
Riot police on Friday dispersed demonstrators chanting anti-police and army slogans in the eastern part of the Mediterranean city, Al-Ahram Arabic news website reported.
At least eight protesters belonging to the now-outlawed Muslim Brotherhood group were arrested for possession of fireworks and bladed weapons, a statement by the
Alexandria
security directorate said.
Friday has become a regular day for protest in
Egypt
with demonstrators usually gathering at mosques after the weekly Islamic prayer.
But street protests by Islamists, who oppose last year's ouster of Islamist president Mohamed Morsi, have dwindled in recent months amid a government crackdown that has seen hundreds of protesters killed in clashes with police and thousands of others jailed.
