Saudi Ambassador to Egypt Ahmed al-Qattan said work at the embassy and consulates in Egypt will be doubled to finish work that has been held up since last week. The embassy will reopen on Sunday. Saudi Arabia recalled its ambassador to Egypt after hundreds of people staged a protest in front of the Saudi Embassy following the arrest of an Egyptian lawyer, Ahmed al-Gizawy, for allegedly attempting to smuggle drugs into the country. Activists allege Gizawy was targeted for making critical statements about the Saudi government. In statements published on Saturday in Riyadh, Qattan said Umra and other visas that were supposed to be issued last week will be issued as soon as possible. He added that the recent standoff was only a cursory one and that the responses on both sides have shown the depth of relations between the two nations. Edited translation from MENA
