Traffic through Egypt's Suez Canal resumed Sunday evening; it had been partially disrupted for a period of three hours due to a grounded ship. The blockage occurred when a 42,000-ton container ship ran aground due to engine failure. The ship was later moved by The Suez Canal Authority (SCA) technical team. SCA media spokesman Tarek Hassanein told the state-owned Middle East News Agency that the sudden engine failure of the 42,000-ton container ship Zim Shekou, which carried a Liberian flag, did not cause damage to other ships and did not lead to oil spills in the canal. Hassanein said the incident occurred as the ship was passing by Kilo 43, which lies north of the Kantara Station. He went on to say that orders to anchor were immediately issued for all ships passing through the waterway behind the Liberian ship. SCA locomotives then secured the ship to a buoy in the area.
