6 April Youth demand release of detainees
Published in Almasry Alyoum on 11 - 04 - 2010

More than 50 members of the 6 April Youth Movement organized a protest yesterday before the attorney general's office to demand the release of movement members who were detained during protests in downtown Cairo last Tuesday.
The demonstrators chanted slogans such as, "Freedom and bread are the demands of every honorable Egyptian" and "This government of freedom has began to arrest girls." The protesters also hung banners reading, "I'm a doctor, a lawyer, a worker and a student and I demand the amendment of the Constitution," as well as other slogans.
Gamila Ismail, Janet Abdel Alim and Abdel Rahman Faris, along with the Front for the Defense of Egyptian Protesters presented two legal complaints to the attorney general. The first complaint concerned incidents of assault by security forces against Nour Ayman Nour, Ismail's son. The second concerned incidents of assault on Janet Abdel Alim and Abdel Rahman Faris while they were detained in a garage after the 6 April protests.
Ismail told Al-Masry Al-Youm that Adel Said, an adviser to the attorney general, added her complaint about the torture of her son to the complaint of indecent assault.
"I hope that the investigations do the victims justice and that the offenders are brought before the court," Ismail said.
Asmaa Mahfouz, media coordinator for 6 April Youth Movement, said the attorney general issued an order for the release of all detained members of the movement, but that the Interior Ministry refused to implement the decision.
Mahfouz pointed to the fact that Mohamed Awad, Ahmad Abel Salam and Romany Samuel, members of the movement, were still being detained in the police departments of Marg and Matariya. She said that their lawyers from the Front for the Defense of Egyptian Protesters confirmed that 6 April Youth members have been tortured, which she says is an attempt to make them an example for anyone who echos the demands as Mohamed ElBaradei.
ElBaradei, the former director of the UN's International Atomic Energy Agency, has issued demands for constitutional reforms allowing for open elections and has formed an opposition coalition calling itself the National Association for Change.
Security forces assaulted Bahaa Saber, a member of the pro-democracy Kefeya movement, after he passed through iron barricades set up by security forces and screamed in front of the court entrance, "Mr. Attorney General take your decision now!"
