The state-run High Elections Commission (HEC) has disqualified 29 parliamentary candidates affiliated with the Muslim Brotherhood (MB) opposition movement without explanation, MB sources said on Monday. “The commission has disqualified all of our candidates for the workers' seats in Alexandria,” said brotherhood MP Hamdi Hassan. Egypt is scheduled to hold countrywide parliamentary elections on 28 November. Meanwhile, a number of parliamentary hopefuls belonging to the ruling National Democratic Party who failed to win party nominations threatened to vote for candidates affiliated with the MB. On Monday, the HEC announced that it would be accepting candidacy complaints and challenges during the next four days. "A final list of candidates will be announced on 14 November, signaling the beginning of the campaigning period,” HEC spokesman Sameh al-Kashef said. According to HEC officials, the total number of candidates running in the parliamentary elections stands at 5720, including 132 women. Translated from the Arabic Edition.
