Parliament has yesterday approved the bill on legal fees though the opposition and the National Democratic Party (NDP) MPs were against it. They believe the fees that were proposed by Justice Minister Mamdouh Marei are too high. NDP Organization Secretary Ahmed Ezz agreed with the law in principle and without reservations, contending that the increase in the fees is less than what is stipulated in the law of 1944. Marei said the fees were increased only 10-fold, while according to the Central Bank, all prices have gone up 163 times in the past 60 years. “That law still talks in terms of pennies. Raising the fees from 5 piaster to 50 piaster is still less than a bus fare,” he said. Meanwhile, security forces prevented hundreds of lawyers yesterday from protesting against the draft law before parliament. They said they would continue protesting at the Bar Association until their point of view is considered.
