A number of strange fatwas have been unofficially issued over the years, till now, that coincide with the beginning of Muslim holy month of Ramadan. The fatwas, apparently only aiming to stir controversy among Muslims, being circulating are about the rules of fasting and what could break fasting. To start, a number of Salafist preachers claim that the timing of Fajr [dawn] prayer in Egypt is not correct, saying that it should be a bit later. This is a very odd claim, seeing that such things as the start of day light or dawn is not a man-made 'invention' to be prone to error. Not surprisingly, the parliament's Religious Committee stressed its rejection to this fatwa. Prolongation of Tarawih prayers, extra prayers performed by Sunni Muslims during Ramadan, also raised controversy between Salafist preachers and Al-Azhar's scholars. Salafists criticized prolongation of Tarawih prayers, saying that it contradicts with the Sunnah, while the scholars refused this vision, saying that it desirable.
