Cairo—Al-Azhar scholars and officials have expressed their complete rejection of the draft amendments of the Al-Azhar institution, submitted by member of parliament Mohamed Abu Hamed and others. On March 6, Abu Hamed announced his intention to submit to parliament the proposal amending Law No. 103 of 1961, which regulates Al-Azhar affairs. The Undersecretary of the Parliament's Religious Committee, Omar Hamroush, objected to the proposed bill viewing it as "contradicting the status of Al-Azhar," and describing it as a "part of the smear campaign against the institution."
