Will France change the balance of power in Europe?
Published in Albawaba on 03 - 04 - 2017

Amid increasing speculations over the right wing's domination of the elections scheduled to be held in Europe during the coming period, French presidential elections could be a turning point in the future of the continent. The corruption accusations hunting the rightist candidates could change the balance of powers in France's political arena during the coming short period before the launch of the French presidential elections.
The recent accusations strongly smeared the image of rightist candidates, including Francois Fillon and Marine Le Pen, as the French authorities accused them of allocating large amounts of money to members of their families under false jobs. However, theses accusation could have served the interests of other candidates affiliating to the Left wing, including Emanuel Macron and Benoit Hamon.
The Curse of Corruption
It is not the first time for French politicians to be accused of involving in corruption cases, as former rightist president Nicolas Sarkozy, who affiliates to the same center right Republicans Party of Fillon, was accused of the same charges. He was investigated by the authorities over the sources on which he depended to finance his electoral campaign when he was seeking a second term against then-socialist candidate Francois Hollande.
French Journalist Laurent Bonnefoy said that the corruption accusations against the rightist candidates are not new thing at all, as the world witnessed the same scene during the U.S Presidential elections held in November. He added, "In America, Hillary was accused of treason in the framework of her leaked emails, while Trump was accused of spying due to his deep relations with Russia."
He added, in an email statement to "Al Bawaba News", that such accusations are expected before the elections, as they have been used to achieve political gains. He stressed that the French people will give the priority to make serious change during the coming period, stressing that they will not accept the continuation of the current policies that led to notable deterioration on both economic and security situations.
Opinion Polls Game
However, the accusations against the rightist candidates are not limited to corruption, as they face other accusations of collusion with Russia. These accusations coincided with the emergence of a number of of opinion polls that guessed the win of rightist candidate Francois Fillon who enjoys good relations with Russia's President Vladimir Putin.
French diplomat Beyar Fimon said, in a televised statement on BBC, that Russian will perform a major role during the coming period not only in Europe's foreign policies but also on the internal level. He added that the increasing speech of the Russian role in the U.S presidential election and its extension to Europe will lead not only to influencing the results of elections in France and other European countries but also to undermining the western democracy.
Macron's surprise
The current challenge facing the rightist candidates of the French presidential elections and low popularity of the current ruling Socialist Party could serve the interests of the Centrist candidate Emanuel Macron. According to recent poll conducted by "BVA" institution, Macron will participate in the run-off round, scheduled to be held in May, against the far-right candidate Marine Le Pen.
Bonnefoy said that Macron has a good opportunity during the coming elections, especially that he adopts a different speech based on improving the ethical rules of France's political life. He added that he could benefit from the current problems facing his competitors, while the major challenge facing him is that he was a part of the current unpopular Hollande's government.
