Egypt's President Abdel-Fattah al-Sisi met in Washington with Chairman of the United Nations General Assembly, Peter Thomson, a statement issued by the Egyptian presidency said on Saturday. During the meeting, President Sisi affirmed the priority Egypt gives to boost the UN efforts to address the current international challenges. Sisi stressed Egypt's keenness to continue its effective participation in the UN peacekeeping missions to assist UN efforts in maintaining international peace and security, the statement read. The Egyptian president stressed the importance of concerted efforts by the international community to reach political solutions to keep the unity and territorial integrity of the region's countries. Sisi called upon the UN to further mobilize efforts to provide the necessary funding to realize sustainable development goals, particularly in African countries. For his part, Mr. Thomson lauded Egypt's key role to achieve security and stability in the Middle East as well as its keenness to reach political solutions to various crises in the region. He also appreciated Egypt's effective participation in the UN activities as well as other multilateral international fora. He hailed the Egyptian endeavors to support the issues of African and developing countries, particularly in light of its current membership of the UN Security Council. Sisi arrived in Washington on Saturday in an official visit. He is due to meet a number of high-level officials including a summit with U.S. President Donald Trump on Monday.
