A Cairo criminal court will consider Thursday the retrial of ousted Egyptian president Hosni Mubarak's former chief of staff Zakaria Azmi on corruption charges, Al-Bawaba News reported. The court has postponed the case in the last hearing to end the conciliation proceedings with the state over the corruption case. In May 2012, Azmi was sentenced to seven years in jail and ordered to pay a fine of EGP 38m charged with illegal acquisition of funds. However, the Court of Cassation ruled to cancel the judgment of the Cairo Criminal Court and ordered a retrial of Azmi. An aide to Mubarak since 1989, Azmi was considered an influential figure in the presidency and in the now-dissolved National Democratic Party (NDP).
