Security forces thwarted detainees at Hawamdia police station from escaping, prompting officers and members of police station to confront them, firing tear gas canisters, Youm7 News reported Saturday. The incident resulted in the death of a detainee who was choked to death as a result of the tear gas canisters. A security source that spoke to Youm7, on condition of anonymity, said that the deceased was being held pending charges of possessing firearms. The detainees caused riots at the police station, after a quarrel broke out among them, which led to an escape attempt, prompting officers and members of the police station to close the doors of the building, in an attempt to control them. Security forces launched tear gas canisters, in order to prevent detainees from escaping, the source revealed.
