Security officials say a sniper shot a policeman dead in the restive northern Sinai town of Sheikh Zuweid. The officials, speaking on condition of anonymity because they are not authorized to speak to reporters, say the policeman was standing guard in a surveillance tower at the Sheikh Zuweid police station when he was shot Saturday. No group immediately claimed responsibility for the attack. The military is facing a growing insurgency in North Sinai. The area's Islamic State affiliate has claimed responsibility for numerous deadly attacks. On July 1 the military has said that a multi-checkpoint assault killed at least 17 soldiers in north Sinai. Officials from multiple branches of Egypt's security forces previously told The Associated Press that the attack killed dozens more.
