An urgent meeting was held Monday by the Council of Journalists' Syndicate, headed by the chairperson Yahya Qalash to discuss the provisions related to the press in the new anti-terrorism law and its impact on the freedom of journalism, State media reported. The Article 33 of the draft anti-terrorism law states stipulates that "to be sent for not less than two years in prison, who reports false news about any terrorist attack, which contradict official statements issued by the concerned authorities." The syndicate underlined the violation of that article to the Article No.71 in the Egyptian Constitution which "prohibits to censor, confiscate, discontinue, or close Egyptian newspapers or media channels." The law was approved by the cabinet last week after President Abdel Fattah Al-Sisi pledged tougher legal measures to counter terrorism after the assassination of the country's top public prosecutor and the recent terror acts in the Sinai Peninsula.
