Despite the opposition from members of her government, German Chancellor Angella Merkel insists on meeting with Egypt's President Abdel Fattah Al Sisi, German News Agency reported on Wednesday. German government spokesperson said, "The invitation to the Egyptian President is still standing." Merkel's position comes a day after the message sent by Bundestag's Speaker Norbert Lammert to Egypt's Ambassador to Berlin to cancel his meeting with the President. He justified his decision with what he described as human rights violations committed in Egypt under the current regime. Egypt's Ambassadot to Germany Mohamed Hegazy said, in a statement, that the President has not asked for a meeting with Lammert. He said that the German side, not the Egyptian government, put the meeting in Sisi's agenda during his visit due to be held in June.
