The curfew was initially imposed on October 25, following two deadly attacks in El-Arish, which killed dozens of soldiers and were claimed by Egypt's deadliest terrorist group, Ansar Bayt Al-Maqdis. The ministry said in a statement that the AU have expressed interest in observing the elections, which are due in March. According to the ministry, it relayed the AU's interest to the Supreme Electoral Committee (SEC) which will take a decision on the issue.
