Ahmed Al-Tayeb, the Grand Imam of Al-Azhar and former president of Al-Azhar University, said during his meeting with Roy Leshnak, Canadian ambassador in Cairo, on Monday, that Al-Azhar's mission is to spread the true message of Islam, which is moderate by its nature. He affirmed that Islam is innocent from all the killing and distribution that the terrorist groups and sectarian militias commit. Leshnak, offered his condolences to Al-Tayeb, concerning the casualties that the Egyptian army has suffered from during the latest terrorist attack that took place in Sinai last Friday. He affirmed his government's backing to Al-Tayeb concerning his efforts to support global peace and stability. He also highlighted his government's appreciation to Al-Azhar`s role in correcting the Islamic values and essence, in addition to his promotion of moderate Islam in Egypt. Leshnak, said that the Canadian embassy in Egypt will play a key role to further boost the relations in variety of fields, especially cultural and scientific fields. The meeting focused on ways to strengthen bilateral ties between Canada and Al-Azhar.
