AFTER 11 years, the headquarters of the African Wushu Confederation (AWC) returns to Cairo where Egypt was president of the African body. The elections took place in Cairo and the president's seat went to Sherif Mustafa, president of the Egyptian Wushu Federation, after the withdrawal of the candidate from Madagascar. Wushu is both an exhibition and a full-contact sport derived from traditional Chinese martial arts. The International Wushu Federation was established in 1990 in Beijing during the 11th Asian summer Games. Currently, the IWUF has 146 members, across five continental federations worldwide. With the new elections and the moving of the headquarters to Egypt, African Wushu has a chance to resume its activities which had been virtually suspended since both the president and the headquarters were based in troubled Libya which made it exceptionally difficult to carry out activities or monitor their progress. The elections were held within the agenda of the congress and committee meetings of the African Confederation. Guests enjoyed an entertaining, sightseeing programme drawn up by the event's organisers headed by Walid Al-Kashef, head of the Giza Wushu Zone. The elections were held under the supervision of the International Wushu Federation's representatives and Executive Committee Vice President Anthony Goh of the US, Executive Committee member Paulo Araujo of Portugal and president of the African Union of African Confederations Ahmed Nasser. Four deputies to the president were selected from Tunisia, South Africa, Benin and Madagascar, in addition to four executive committee members. Delivering his first statement as president, Mustafa announced that the African Confederation will support all African countries who are members of the confederation and welcomed newcomers for the sake of developing and spreading Wushu on the African continent. He added the AWC will deliver mainly technical support including holding international training sessions for coaches and referees given by the most certified and qualified Wushu experts. The IWUF is devoted to the spread and development of Wushu throughout the world, to enrich people's lives by making them healthier, both mentally and physically, and to promote friendship and understanding between all people worldwide through the spirit of sport. The IWUF is recognised by the International Olympic Committee (IOC), and is also a member of both ARISF and Sport Accord.
