The Safarkhan Gallery in Zamalek presents the 2014 Summer collection, showcasing the works of old and contemporary talents. The exhibition honours veteran artist Al-Hussein Fawzi (1905-1999), who began his artistic studies in 1922 at the School Of Fine Arts, specialising in oil painting. He earned a diploma in graphic art from the Ecole d'Estienne print school in Paris in 1932. He then obtained a diploma from the High School of Arts and Decorations in Paris in 1933. Although Fawzi made his name as a graphic artist, he had an active career in the fine arts. For two decades (1950-1970) he was a renowned book and press illustrator. He also made aquarelle paintings for the two volumes of Cairo Mosques, published by the Ministry of Awqaaf (or Islamic endowments) in 1951, as well as for Minarets of Cairo, published by Dar Al Kitab Al-Arabi. On his return to Egypt, Fawzi founded the Department of Graphic Arts at the Faculty of Fine Arts; he was later appointed director of the department, a position he held until his retirement. He also supervised the Fine Arts Studio in Luxor from 1954 to 1960. Fawzi was one of four Egyptian artists to have their work engraved on crystal by the Steuben glass factory in New York (the others were Gamal El Seguini, Hamed Abd Allah and Hussein Bikar). Fawzi was awarded an honorary degree for an oil painting exhibited at the 1939 French Salon, a state prize in 1963 and the Lithography prize at the Alexandria Biennial in the same year. In 1989 he was awarded the State Merit Prize. The exhibition will run through 30 September.
