Hospitals declare emergency in Gharbiya after swine flu death Recent cases of bird and swine flu in Egypt led health officials in the northern Egyptian governorate to declare a state of emergency
A state of emergency was imposed in hospitals in Gharbiya governorate in northern Egypt on Saturday in the face of an outbreak of swine and bird flu in the country. One patient has died from swine flu in the Menshawy general hospital in Tanta and four cases of bird flu are suspected in a Mahalla hospital, the health ministry official Mohamed Sharshar told Al-Ahram Arabic website. On Tuesday, the ministry announced that 195 people have been hospitalised with the virus since 2013. The virus killed 24 people in the past two months nationwide. In 2009, the global swine flupandemic prompted Egyptian authorities to slaughter around 300,000 pigs previously used to dispose of the city's organic garbage. http://english.ahram.org.eg/News/93737.aspx
