Egyptian activist slammed with month in prison for handing out flyers Strong Egypt Party member Ayman Maher is arrested for handing out flyers 'inciting against the police and military' and sentenced to one month in prison and a EGP 50 fine
A Cairo midmeanour court sentenced Ayman Maher, a member of the Strong Egypt Party, to a month in prison and fined him EGP 50 for handing outs flyers "inciting against police and army" on Tuesday. The court set bail at EGP 100. Maher was arrested on 16 November while handing out flyers announcing demonstrations to mark the second anniverary of the Mohamed Mahmoud clashes that took place on 19 November 2011. Maher has been detained pending investigation since then. The Strong Egypt Party, founded by former Islamist presidential candidate Abdel-Moneim Abou El-Fotouh, held a protest denouncing his detention earlier on Tuesday in front of Abdeen Court in downtown Cairo. According to the party's Rights and Freedoms Committee, Maher will be released on Wednesday after his bail is paid. The defendent will appeal the verdict. http://english.ahram.org.eg/News/87530.aspx
