Art Alert: Exhibition commemorating birth anniversary of Mahatma Gandhi
On Wednesday 2 October, the Maulana Azad Centre for Indian Culture (MACIC) will inaugurate a posters, caricature exhibition entitled the "Spirit of Gandhi in Egypt"
Published in Ahram Online on 26 - 09 - 2013

Cairo's Maulana Azad Centre for Indian Culture (MACIC) will launch an exhibition entitled the "Spirit of Gandhi in Egypt" on 2 October, marking the birth date of India's famous peacemaker Mahatma Gandhi (1869-1948).
2 October is also known as the 'International Day of Non-Violence,' designated as such by the UN General Assembly in 2007.
The exhibition will include the prize-winning entries for a 2012 poster competition held by the Indian embassy entitled "Did you sense the Spirit of Gandhi in Tahrir?," as well as caricatures of Mahatma Gandhi by prominent artists of the Egyptian Caricature Society.
"Did you sense the spirit of Gandhi in Tahrir Square?" was first displayed in El-Sawy Culturewheel in May 2013 as part of the "India by the Nile" festival, a month-long celebration of Indian arts and culture. The exhibition presented the results of a 2 October 2012 competition that targeted two groups of artists: one from Egypt, and the other from an Indian-sponsored cooperation platform between African countries and India. Prizes were distributed to each group individually.
The "Spirit of Gandhi in Egypt" will also showcase a selection of caricatures of Mahatma Gandhi – chronicling various facets of his life – by prominent artists of the Egyptian Caricature Society. The Caricature Society is collaborating with the Indian embassy to create a collection of portraits of prominent Indian personalities, including politicians, film stars, and other leading figures.
On the same day, the "Chennai Express," a 2013 action comedy that was one of India's most successful films in history, will open in eight cinemas in Cairo and Alexandria. The screening of "Chennai Express" marks the first step in a long-term project to bring Bollywood productions back to Egypt's theatres.
Programme:
Exhibition inauguration: Wednesday, 2 October at 6pm
The exhibition will run until 10 October
Maulana Azad Centre for Indian Culture (MACIC), 23, Talaat Harb, Downtown, Cairo
