Coaching Zamalek was a big risk, Toulan admits Under-fire coach says he cannot be compared to his more successful predecessor because circumstances are different
Zamalek coach Helmi Toulan admitted that he took the biggest gamble of his career when he assumed the team's leadership after very short notice. "I was appointed only 10 days before the start of the group stage matches in a very difficult pot that included Ahly," Toulan told a sports program on Monday. "But I couldn't refuse the appointment because the demand came from the club that raised me and gave me fame," he added. Toulan, a former coach of Haras El-Hoddoud, Petrojet and Egypt U-20 team, assumed the Zamalek post after the departure of celebrated Brazilian coach Jorvan Vieira in June. He came under fire after Zamalek was eliminated from the African Champions League and conceded a humiliating 4-2 defeat to Ahly. "It is really unfair to compare me with Vieira. He had enough time to work and was also not in the same group as Ahly, which eased pressure." "You can't judge me when I haven't been given the tools I need," Toulan concluded. Under Vieira's leadership, the Whites finished on top of group B in their league campaign. However, the season was called off after the spat of violence that followed the 3 July ouster of former president Mohamed Morsi. Since then, many key elements have left the team, including midfielders Ibrahim Salah and Alex Mendomo, striker Abdoulaye Cisse, left back Sabri Rahil and keeper Ahmed El-Shennawy. The board has not been able to replace these players due to lack of funds. Ultras White Knights, Zamalek's hard-core football fans, staged protests on Thursday against the club's management for their alleged "failure in club leadership." Club president Mamdouh Abbas announced on Friday the signing of Enppi's midfielder Moemen Zakareya, promising additional future signings to get the team back on track.
