Egyptian white cab drivers have resumed their protest in front of the Ministry of Finance in Cairo today, insisting that the 12 demands they submitted to the ministry last Sunday have not been met. Last Sunday a few hundred drivers protested in front of the Ministry of Finance, objecting to the terms of the replacement scheme the ministry launched in mid-2009 to replace older traditional black and white taxis with new white-only taxis. The drivers are demanding that the ministry reconsider the LE5,000 they were paid for their old cabs, insisting that it was less than their original value. Drivers also suspect the cars were given to the Ministry of the Environment through a grant and were not paid for. The drivers hope answers will be forthcoming from Gawdat Al-Malt, president of the Central Auditing Organisation. They also demanded a reduction in annual insurance and taxes paid by drivers. They also want to reduce the amount of installments paid for cars to LE550 and to delay the due date of current payments, citing the revolution's disruption on their work and its effect on recent earnings.
