Violence erupted Monday evening during a protest staged by supporters of deposed president Mohamed Morsi, who moved to block the vital Ramsis road in downtown Cairo to demand Morsi's reinstatement. It is unclear how the clashes started but a live footage on Al-Jazeera showed teargas being fired into the air – reportedly by police forces deployed on top of the Six of October Bridge – as protesters chanted "peaceful, peaceful" and "the police are thugs." An alliance of 40 Islamist parties and groups, led by the Muslim Brotherhood from which Morsi hails, has spearheaded a number of demonstrations across the country and especially in Cairo on Monday. They are protesting the popularly-backed military overthrow of Morsi who, elected in June 2012, was ousted on 3 July. The group rejects what it describes as a blatant coup d'etat against Morsi's democratic legitimacy. http://english.ahram.org.eg/News/76551.aspx
