PREVIEW: Egypt's league to resume amid security concerns The 17th matchday of the Egyptian Premier League kicks off on Saturday despite threats from fans who are angered by crowd bans
Ahly are scheduled to face Gouna in the 17th matchday of the Egyptian Premier League on Saturday, one day before Zamalek play Ismaily in the same round. The Egyptian Football Association (EFA) decided to resume the games of the extraordinary season after a month's freeze while the national teams were competing in the African qualifiers for the 2014 World Cup in Brazil. The games were scheduled to be played on Thursday but were delayed for an indefinite period due to security concerns. The EFA withdrew their decision to postpone the league and instead rescheduled it to restart on 22 June, after receiving confirmation from the interior ministry that they will secure the games. The decision came out after days of speculations that the whole season is under threat of being cancelled because of security concerns, after the Ahly and Zamalek's hardcore fans, the Ultras Ahlawy (UA-07) and the Ultras White Knights (UWK), demanded that the audience ban on their team's matches be lifted. "We will be present at Saturday's match," the group said via Facebook. "Nobody can stop us from attending. Football is for the fans. " Crowds have not been allowed to attend football games in Egypt since February 2012, when post-match violence between Ahly and Masry fans left more than 70 dead. The resulting prosecutions saw Masry officials given prison sentences and dozens of Masry fans sentenced to death. Cairo giants Ahly, Zamalek and Ismaily will play the games without too much tension, as the trio all have places in the mini-league round. The fourth team to qualify will either be ENPPI or Smouha. Ahly coach Mohamed Youssef revealed that the team will continue preparing for their upcoming Gouna clash, as they haven't yet received a formal letter from the Egyptian Football Association about delaying the games. "The decision to delay the Egyptian Premier League for an indefinite period due to security concerns didn't affect the players," Youssef was quoted as saying on the club's official website. "Ahly's players are experienced in dealing with these different circumstances and they are fit for any decision," he added. Zamalek technical staff handed their players a rest for one day after the EFA announced on their official website about the round delay. http://english.ahram.org.eg/News/74605.aspx
