Al-Azhar dorm staff charged as food poisoning cases reach 179 Students protest outside university's administration building after the second mass food poisoning incident on the campus this month
The number of Al-Azhar University students who have been struck down with food poisoning since Monday has reached 179, state-run MENA news agency reported, although most of the cases are not severe. Egyptian prosecutors referred the head of the university's dormitory as well as the dormitory kitchen manager and eight others to court on Tuesday on charges of negligence and violating regulations. Dozens of Al-Azhar students were hospitalised on Monday after eating at a campus cafeteria. The incident is the second of its kind at Al-Azhar University this month. On April 1, almost five hundred students were hospitalised with food poisoning after eating at the cafeteria. On Tuesday afternoon, angry students closed the doors of the university's administrative building where the management was meeting with members of the university's student union to look into the case. Enraged over what they see as the university's neglect, students are calling for the sacking of the university's head, along with its board members. Late on Monday, hundreds of students blocked Nasr Road near the dormitory and clashed with police, who fired teargas in an attempt to open the road to traffic. http://english.ahram.org.eg/News/70442.aspx
