One killed in new clashes at Qalyubia church: Egypt health ministry Clashes late Sunday at Mar Girgis Church in Al-Khosous village leave one dead and 14 injured, says health ministry
One person was killed and 14 injured in clashes between protesters and police forces at Mar Girgis Church in Qalyubia, Egypt late Sunday. The health ministry announced Monday that one person was killed by gunshot and was transferred to the Al-Khanka Hospital morgue. Fourteen were injured in the clashes in the Qalyubia town of Al-Khasous and were taken to hospitals for treatment. The clashes in Qalyubia (just north of Cairo) coincided with an attack in Cairo proper by unknown assailants on a funeral at the Abbasiya Cathedral that resulted in two deaths and at least 90 injuries. Clashes in Qalyubia, north of Cairo, have now subsided, according to an Al-Ahram correspondent. Hundreds of mourners were attending the funeral in the Cairo cathedral for five Coptic Christians who were killed in sectarian violence in Al-Khosous in the early hours of Saturday. Saturday's sectarian clashes in Qalioubiya broke out after a group of Christian teenagers reportedly painted offensive drawings on the gates of Egypt's Al-Azhar building, state news agency MENA reported. The situation escalated further when someone fired a gun into the air, killing a young boy with a stray bullet, Reuters reported. In the aftermath of the violence, 15 people were arrested and the area was cordoned off by police forces. A number of Christian-owned shops were reportedly smashed by angry protesters. Reuters stated that some Christian and Muslim properties had been torched.
